This is the catalogue of the eponymous exhibition (Nuoro, Museo Man, 8 July-30 October 2022). The exhibition title “Sensorama” was inspired by a machine invented in 1957 by the US filmmaker Morton Heilig to test synaesthetic effects in the experimental cinema, with a view to amplifying sensations – both sound ones via stereophonic audio and tactile, dynamic and olfactive ones. Sensorama was a “factory of illusions” and a field of visual experimentation for the avant-gardes.

The route examines the fantasy cinematography of George Méliès, based on the disappearance of objects and levitating things and people, before focusing on interactions between avant-garde artists (Léger, Man Ray, Picabia, Cocteau and Duchamp) and the cinema. It also explores the splendid paradoxes of the digital era with an installation in augmented reality via which “non-reality” expands beyond its boundaries to flood our perception. The whole is further boosted by site-specific installations such as Felice Varini’s drawings in space, as monumental as they are ephemeral, plus a magic room created by the designer Denis Santachiara and a grotto of books hollowed out like rocks by impalpable body prints by Marco Cordero.
