Piero Bottoni, graduated in architecture in 1926 from the Milan Politecnico, where he later taught, having previously also taught in Trieste University's engineering department. Bottoni is one of the guiding spirits behind Rationalism, as he was when it came to criticising it.

Piero Bottoni (Milan 1903-73) graduated in architecture in 1926 from the Milan Politecnico, where he later taught from 1964 to 1971, having previously also taught in Trieste University’s engineering department from 1954 to 1965. Bottoni is one of the guiding spirits behind Rationalism, as he was when it came to criticising it. In 1933 he was part of the team drafting the Athens Charter and one of the promoters of the magazine “Quadrante”. His architecture before the war (up to 1945) was to be found in Milan, Livorno, Reggio Emilia, Imola, Naples,Bologna, Lecco, Massa and Valera Fratta; and after the war in Marina di Massa, Milan, Sesto Calende, Storo, Ferrara, Bologna, Capri and Sesto S. Giovanni. He was one of the authors of the Valle d’Aosta Plan in 1936 and the A.R. Plan in 1944-45, two fundamental works in the recent history of Italian town planning. He was also in charge of Milan’s QT8 experimental district.
