This volume is a continuation and above all and expansion of the exhibition “Letizia Battaglia. Senza fine”, hosted in Rome, at the Baths of Caracalla, until 5 November 2023: an original project bringing together iconic images and others less well known to create an athematic and timeless path through the fifty years (1971-2020) of Letizia Battaglia’s photographic work.
The editors of the book, Paolo Falcone and Sabrina Pisu, reproduce the polyphony of the works of the Sicilian photographer, but with a much larger number of images than those on display.
Seven women were involved, writers and authors, “people”, as she herself would have called them, who either knew or didn’t know, love or meet Letizia Battaglia in a real or imaginary place, apart from life in the strict sense, but still within a common ideal. Their voices embody two generations: the roots of the past become branches that rise high, unconstrained or impeded, in an “endless” story. And it is precisely the letters of the expression “without end” that give life to words that enable us to describe the strong personality, projects, civil commitment and social settings to which she bore a witness.
A book that, like a new grammar, tries to learn more about the many Letizia Battaglias who inhabited her. Through these writings, we have tried to offer a different narrative, in which all the embodiments of Letizia Battaglia – photography, activism, publishing, volunteering, politics and oneirism, civil commitment and provocation – are expressed in literary and visual form.
