The fascinating artistic period in which the friendship began of Balthus, Alberto and Diego Giacometti, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Jean Leymarie: analysis of some of the works of these great figures in 20th-century art.
The catalogue of the exhibition held in Venice, curated by Elena Cárdenas Malagodi and Stefano Cecchetto, presents the fascinating artistic period in which the friendship began of Balthus, Alberto and Diego Giacometti, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Jean Leymarie.
The volume, retracing the exhibition layout, starts with a tribute to Alberto Giacometti, through a selection of his drawings, including some from private collections never exhibited before. Next come the sculptures of Diego Giacometti, Alberto’s brother, bearing witness to his artistic stature, followed by the drawings and gouaches of Balthus, while Henri Cartier-Bresson is represented by 20 photographs taken of his friend Alberto Giacometti. The texts by Jean Leymarie, art historian and directory of the Academy of France, illustrate the exhibition itinerary and accompany the reader in an analysis of the works of these great figures in 20th-century art.
