The essays in this book are based on doctoral theses in Architectural History. The theme shared by all the writings is the complex relationship of idea, text and context in the period between the 15th and the 19th centuries.

[The square, the church, the park. Essays in architectural history (15th-19th century)] The essays in this book are based on doctoral theses in Architectural History produced at the Department of History of the University Institute of Architecture of Venice. The authors are Donata Battilotti, Giulio Lupo, Manuela Morresi, Alessandra Ponte and Sergio Villari. The versions offered to readers here are the result of revisions and expansions prepared in collaboration with the editor, and the choice has been oriented toward unpublished works. The doctoral candidates of the first cycle were faced with two themes: “the square” as a complementary element to the loggia in the urban renewal of Renaissance Veneto, and “the use of water” as an urban strategy or fundamental instrument of the garden and the park in the modern era. The theme shared by all the writings is the complex relationship of idea, text and context in the period between the 15th and the 19th centuries. In this sense the book has a dual significance, presenting results of research and opening new directions for investigation.
