A clear and up to date text, accompanied by splendid photographs, is our guide to the decorations and the frescoes of Palazzo dei Conservatori in the Campidoglio, and the history and legends of ancient Rome.
This volume illustrates the frescoes and paintings in the state apartments of Palazzo dei Conservatori, the so-called “Appartamento” used by the magistrates, which played a special role in the city government of Rome. In the sixteenth century the rooms underwent a decorative and artistic renovation that culminated in the restyling by Michelangelo. Iacopo Rimanda, Tommaso Laureti, and Cavalier d’Arpino were entrusted with translating the legends of the city’s founding and the highlights of the history of the Roman republic into a unified design of paintings featuring examples of virtue and valour whose symbolic value is still intact.
