Bonacolsi The Elder, a sculptor in the Mantua of Mantegna and Isabella d'Este
Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi known as the Elder (1460?-1528) incisor, sculptor, goldsmith and antiquarian is one of the lesser-known figures in the Italian Renaissance. And yet he was one of its most prolific artists, mainly on behalf of the Gonzaga court in Mantua. The current exhibition is in collaboration with Mantua’s department of Art Heritage and Ethno-anthropology. It offers a rare opportunity to admire Isabella D’Este’s apartments as a widow in Palazzo Ducale, which has recently undergone extensive restoration work.
