Through largely unpublished materials and photographs, the volume reconstructs the extraordinary history of one of the principal and oldest Italian dramatic theatres.
Founded in 1954, after the Piccolo in Milan, the Stabile in Bolzano and the Stabile in Genoa, the Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia, in Trieste, has been supported by the State since its foundation and is recognised by the MIC as one of the twenty TRICs, Theatres of Significant Cultural Interest at the national level. Based on archival materials and previously unpublished illustrations, Paolo Quazzolo reconstructs and analyses the historical and artistic path of the Teatro Stabile Giulia, retracing its history from its foundation to the present. Significant accounts by playwrights, actors, directors and set designers offer authentic sources for the reader to grasp the theatre’s achievements from another point of view. A section is devoted to an analysis in depth of the productions and guidelines that have characterised the productions presented over the 70 years of the theatre’s activity: from Sergio D’Osmo to Furio Bordon, Mimma Gallina, Antonio Calenda, Franco Però and Paolo Valerio, the current director. A substantial section of the volume, consisting of photos and press reviews, consists of an anthology devoted to fifty productions considered significant in artistic and design terms. The individual entries enable the reader to appreciate the specifics of the presentation and capture the stylistic and expressive changes that have characterised the various eras. The volume opens with an introduction by Roberto Morelli and closes with illustrated theatrography, bibliography and index of names.
