Salvatore Ferragamo

He was born in Avellino in 1898. After studying shoemaking in Naples, he returned to his hometown to set up shop. In 1915, he emigrated to Boston then moved to California, first to Santa Barbara and then to Hollywood where he designed footwear for the stars of the day, like Gloria Swanson, Joan Crawford, and Greta Garbo, and for the first film productions, soon becoming known as "Shoemaker to the Stars".

In 1927, after thirteen years in the United States, Salvatore returned to Italy, where he settled in Florence, founding the now world-famous Ferragamo company and patenting various models of shoe and technical innovations. His creations ranged from the most eccentric footwear, often virtual works of art, to highly sophisticated and elegant designs anticipating the inventions of other shoe designers and contemporary tastes.
