The Grand Tour in the writings and works of an artist-traveler. A fresco of 18th-century Italy, as readable as a novel. Edited by Anna Ottani Cavina.
[An artist’s voyage in 18th-century Italy. The diary of Thomas Jones].
Published for the first time, the Italian translation of the diary of the English landscape painter Thomas Jones (1742-1803), in a critical edition prepared by Anna Ottani Cavina, the leading expert on this artist, also on an international level. Modern to the point of bordering on abstraction, Thomas Jones, who made his ritual “voyage in Italy” in 1776-83, stopping in Rome and Naples, is a lively narrator who offers readers a vivid picture of Italy in the late 1700s. The diary is illustrated with 80 paintings and drawings by the great artist. Packaged as a precious horizontal album, in a limited edition, the diary is accompanied by learned critical commentary and an introduction by the editor.
