The catalogue accompanies the first retrospective in Rome devoted to Titina Maselli (1924 – 2005), marking the centenary of her birth. The exhibition is presented in two venues: in the Musei di Villa Torlonia Casino dei Principi and at MLAC – Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea in the Sapienza Università di Roma (12 December 2024 – 21 April 2025). It is a major anthological show that sets off, as never before, the work of one of the most important artistic figures of the great international art of the twentieth century. In addition to full-page reproductions of the paintings on display – some of them little known to the general public – the volume includes previously unpublished materials currently being catalogued by the Archivio Titina Maselli, works for the theatre, photographs and documents that made the history of her painting.
The essays in the catalogue, signed by Federica Pirani, Ilaria Schiaffini, Claudia Terenzi, Martina Rossi, Giulia Tulino and Claudio Crescentini, reinterpret Maselli’s achievement and her training, which took place partly in a family environment rich in exchanges with the cultural and intellectual environment.
In addition to the many images illustrating the iconographic themes presented in the two exhibition venues – portraits and self-portraits, still lifes, urban landscapes, sport and theatre – the volume publishes, for the first time in full form, almost all the interviews and presentations devoted to Titina Maselli, which are difficult to find today, together with the biography, bibliography and updated register of theatrical sets and costumes. This documentary appendix is a fundamental resource in the necessary rediscovery of the artist.
