The exhibition surveys the career of the photographer, begun at in the 70's and culminated in the 90's with theMuseum Photographs, which represent people admiring art inside galleries and museums.

The retrospective that MADRE in Naples will house during the winter of 2008 starts from the first black and white pictures of Thomas Struth, and then presents the most consistent core of his production, the large-size images depicting urban and natural landscapes, museum interiors, church façades and portraits. In these images the photographer seems to pursuit atmospheres able to highlight the sense of community and everyday life, through an essential, immobile style, and with no rhetoric. The union between man and his environment creates rare atmospheres, as it also happens for the pictures taken inside museums, in which the photographer observes people contemplating paintings, thus seizing the existential condition of man confronted with his image in the work of art.
