Russian icons of the highest quality: an event of great artistic and cultural interest, not only for the quality and beauty of the icons, but also for their profound theological and philosophical content.
In the context of the celebrations for the Jubilee of 2000, an exhibition of antique Russian icons was held at the Vatican. The catalogue features about 140 icons of very high artistic quality, most seen for the first time in Italy. Truly unique monumental works, like the Omnipotent Savior of the 13th century from the Museum of Jaroslav, “The Birth of Christ” from the early 15th century, owned by the State Gallery of Tretjacov, or the icons from the 16th and 17th centuries, with complex dogmatic content, from the museums of Moscow and St. Petersburg. A volume and an exhibition of great artistic and cultural interest, not only for the quality and beauty of the icons, but also for their profound theological and philosophical content.
