Published to accompany the exhibition organized by the Barbara Cappochin Foundation in Padua in 2014, the volume, which has no ambition of being systematic, presents a small selection of Piano’s built works. Each has been fully documented and illustrated with a rich assortment of drawings, often by searching the archives for the original detailed designs, and with care lavished on the choice of images, so providing an opportunity to examine them easily and enabling every reader to reconstruct their history. Each chapter of the book presents sketches, drawings and photographs, ordered in the conviction that a work of architecture conveys its significance only to those who look at it for the purpose of making it speak directly. The works presented in these pages were chosen to represent both the ways Piano developed his very personal working method and contingencies or professional occasions, which seemed particularly eloquent to illustrate his personality by showing how he dealt with them.
