The poetics of realism, a fundamental chapter in Italian 20th-century culture.
[Realisms / Figurative arts, literature and cinema in Italy from 1943 to 1953] This catalogue investigates a fundamental chapter of Italian 20th-century culture, the period 1943-53. The war came to an end, followed in postwar Italy by a strong, diversified cultural revitalization. Thanks to a multidisciplinary approach the exhibition catalogue makes it possible to fully assess the poetics of realism in all its forms, in both the figurative arts – painting, sculpture and photography – and in cinema. Guttuso, Manzù, Morlotti, Mafai, Cassinari, Levi, Pizzinato, Zigaina, but also directors like Rossellini, De Sica, Visconti or De Santis – with reproductions of the posters for films that made the history of Italian cinema – are just a few of the protagonists of Italian culture in those years. The volume is edited by Luciano Caramel, an outstanding specialist on the 20th century in Italy.
