European by birth and by vocation, Philippe Daverio grew up at the crossroads of Italy, France and Germany. He accompanies us in some reflections on the past of the Old Continent and its intellectual legacy, adding his influential voice as an art historian and cultural anthropologist to the current political debate. The premise is that Europe is the home of all of us, our shared vision of the world speaking the same artistic, musical, architectural and even gastronomical language.

He starts from the thinking of great masters of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Victor Hugo, Sir Winston Churchill, Altiero Spinelli and Paul Valéry, who imagined a united Europe, before focusing on certain periods in history such as the Carolingian Renaissance and the 18th-century courts and then exploring the differences and cross-contaminations between different countries. The provocative conclusion assumes that “The meaning of Europe is also in the senses: we look, listen, feel, smell and eat differently from other peoples and therein lie our shared roots.”
