Morandi e Fontana. Invisibile e Infinito

The catalogue accompanies the exhibition Morandi e Fontana. Invisibile e Infinito (La Spezia, CAMeC – – Centro d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, 12 April – 14 September 2025).

The works of Giorgio Morandi and Lucio Fontana are true twentieth-century icons. They have changed the way we look at the world and think about art, offering topics for discussion and ideas to the new generations. Two artists who, while working along parallel lines, both directed their gaze towards the infinite and the invisible. Morandi experienced art as a sublime mission, being wholly devoted to the timeless poetry of colour and forms in which he managed to harness the unrepresentable and the unfigurable. Fontana projects us towards whatever is furthest and most unattainable to be represented, piercing the surface of the canvas, cutting it with surgical precision. Morandi cherishes the infinite of the invisible, Fontana the invisible of infinity.

The numerous essays and the rich set of illustrations present a direct comparison between the two artists, never so close, although previously exhibited together in numerous group shows.
A comparative timeline of Morandi and Fontana closes the volume, enabling us to easily follow the course of their lives, albeit so different, as well as the development of their artistic practice.
