This volume documents the genesis of the project, the working relationship with the client and the practicalities of transforming the bridge over the Mtkvari into Tbilisi's proud new symbol.

A bridge is by definition a piece of symbolic architecture, because it joins two places together, two social realities, two territories – distinct and distant – that celebrate their union through its span. The bridge designed by Michele De Lucchi this volume is dedicated to straddles the river Mtkvari ie Tbilisi and connects the historic district of Bericoni with Rikhe. A city with a controversial recent history and a host of cultural and ethnic issues, the capital of Georgia is striving to assert its identity by blending its daring urban and architectural development with its existing features. A monument to the dialogue between past and present, this pedestrian bridge has an apparently suspended bow-shaped sunroof that combines engineering and architectural prowess with its wafers of triangular glass encased in a tubular steel membrane. This volume documents the genesis of the project, the working relationship with the client and the practicalities of transforming the bridge over the Mtkvari into Tbilisi’s proud new symbol.
