The history, geography and archaeology of Greek civilization in Southern Italy on exhibit in Catanzaro.
[Magna Græcia / Archaeology of Knowledge] This catalogue documents an extremely interesting exhibition, a journey into the dim and distant past of Western Greek civilization and into the recent past of its rediscovery in the modern age. Essays by the most famous specialists deal with the history, geography and archaeology of Greek civilization in Southern Italy and the men and women who have brought to light its grandeur, the collectors whose collections we can admire in museums all over the world, the foreign travellers and the drawings that brought these picturesque ruins back to their own countries. Priority is given to the illustrated descriptions of the Magna Græcia finds of major historical and artistic interest (suffice it to mention only one of these the celebrated Ludovisi throne), while particular attention is paid to the presentation of the most recent – previously unpublished – new discoveries, which means that the research work is still continuing. The book concludes with an exhaustive inventory of the museums in Calabria, Basilicata, Campania and Puglia.
