Leonora Carrington

The volume is the catalogue of the exhibition of the same name held in Milan, at the Palazzo Reale from 20 September 2025 to 11 January 2026. An important retrospective – the first in Italy – with over 60 works testifying to the extraordinary professional achievement and biography of Leonora Carrington who, starting from her native Lancashire, with her Celtic roots, lived in Florence, Paris, the south of France, Spain and New York, then finally in Mexico, where she settled permanently and where she was long celebrated as one of the most important artists, alongside Frida Kahlo and Remedios Varo.

The exhibition, curated by Carlos Martín and Tere Arcq, is part of the program of the Milano Cortina 2026 Cultural Olympiad. It presents insights into the artistic output and intellectual identity of one of the most singular and visionary figures of the twentieth century through an articulated examination of her paintings, drawings, photographs and archival materials, exploring the whole span of her creative life, from her origins in Europe to her roots in Mexico, her second homeland.

The catalogue, richly illustrated in colour, contains texts by Gabriel Weisz Carrington, professor of Comparative Literature at UNAM, Mexico; Karla Segura Pantoja, professor at the Université de Lyon, France; Susan Aberth, holder of the Edith C. Blum Chair of History of Art and Visual Culture, as well as coordinator of the Theology program at Bard College; Kristoffer Noheden, writer and researcher at the Department of Media Studies at Stockholm University, and the two co-curators.
