The two volumes are dedicated to the artistic experience of Lo Spazio di Via Lazzaro Palazzi. Between the end of the 1980s and the early 1990s, groups of young artists formed on the Milanese contemporary art scene who chose to self-manage organising their exhibitions in unusual places. One of these is located at Via Lazzaro Palazzi, in Porta Venezia area. It was 1989 and the group (composed by Mario Airò, Vincenzo Buonaguro, Matteo Donati, Stefano Dugnani, Giuseppina Mele, Chiyoko Miura, Liliana Moro, Andrea Rabbiosi, Bernhard Rüdiger, Antonello Ruggieri, Adriano Trovato, Massimo Uberti and Francesco Voltolina) decided to organise its own exhibitions and to invite other artists to do the same in an autonomous space independent of the gallery system. In Lo Spazio di Via Lazzaro Palazzi each artist acts as an individual and is at the same time part of a community of peers with whom to dialogue and confront each other.
Although the (deliberate) transience of works and exhibitions has given place to forms of documentation not always well-ordered or planned, with the help of the artists it has recently been possible to put together a collective archive which preserves the memory of the Spazio’s activities and thanks to a donation is now part of the collections of the Museo del Novecento in Milan.
The two volumes enhance this material by contextualizing it historically and critically. The first volume L’archivio in divenire. Lo Spazio di Via Lazzaro Palazzi al Museo del Novecento contains texts (by Cristina Baldacci, Giulia Kimberly Colombo, Iolanda Ratti, Angela Vettese and artists of the group) and images, while the second one offers for the first time the reprinting of the nine numbers of “tiracorrendo”, the magazine self-managed by Lo Spazio, issued between 1989 and 1993.
