Writings, records and documents recount this interesting example of industrial patronage which in the years of postwar renewal, drawing on the American experience, developed a new philosophy of communication, privileging the distinctive qualities of Italian culture by representing art and the humanities. The corporation founded the Esso Prize, of which Lionello Venturi observed: “I had a pleasant surprise at the time from the Esso Prize of 1951. A family of industrialists gave the award to Vespignani and Gentilini, two living artists who reflect the taste of the present and probably that of the future”.
