The rediscovery of an 18th-century opera as an artistic object gives rise to the reconstruction of various stories about the figure of Timur, also known as Tamerlane, Lord of Samarkand and symbol of the unity of the tribes of Central Asia.

This small and precious book enables us to learn about the figure of Timur, Lord of Samarkand, and takes us on a journey full of images and stories. A chance to reflect on the wealth of multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary exchange, a book about dialogue through differences. The rediscovery of an 18th-century opera as an artistic object gives rise to the reconstruction of various stories about the figure of Timur, also known as Tamerlane, Lord of Samarkand and symbol of the unity of the tribes of Central Asia. Tamerlane regarded himself as a “Fighter for the Faith”, now an ever-more topical theme.
But here, Antonio Vivaldi’s Tamerlane is proposed as a privileged observatory, a musical space full of fragments of stories from Central Asia, fabrics, images and scenarios with which the Mediterranean world has kept up a continuous dialogue. The delightful illustrations of miniatures and the text of the book by Magda Pedace provide an opportunity for meditating on the importance of multi-cultural exchange. With this publication, the Inter-University Centre for Research on Sustainable Development of the La Sapienza University in Rome approaches the themes of artistic creativeness and cultural memory.
