Painted by Picasso in 1907, the picture is a version of one of the figures which appears in Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, the masterpiece that marked the crucial breakthrough in the history of art in the 20th century, whose centenary is being celebrated this year. The exhibition, curated by Marina Pugliese, presents the work in a setting that enables visitors to interpret the close links between the Femme nue preserved in Milan’s Civiche Raccolte d’Arte and Picasso’s great painting. This fluid account begins with the portrait and the historical-artistic context and sheds new light on the importance and complexity of the genesis of the work.
