This volume, with a brilliant introduction by Stefano Zuffi, translated into English, French, German and Spanish, illustrates the most significant details of the frescoes in the Camera degli Sposi, by Mantegna, with some thirty beautiful images in colour.
In 1474 Andrea Mantegna dedicated the frescoes in the Camera degli Sposi (bridal chamber) of the recently completed Ducal Palace of Mantua to the Marquis Ludovico II Gonzaga and his wife, Barbara of Brandenburg, who had commissioned it. With this splendid painted cycle Mantegna completely remodelled the structure of the room, celebrating the glory of the House of Gonzaga with a portrait of the whole family and the scene of the meeting between the Marquis and his son Francesco, recently appointed a Cardinal. A masterpiece and symbol of Renaissance art, the Camera degli Sposi was restored in 1984-86. Ever since, the flow of tourists has been regulated so as not to harm the state of preservation of the frescoes.
