The volume illustrates the recent restoration of the façade of Palazzo Madama in Turin. Designed by Filippo Juvarra in the eighteenth century, the building is a historical and architectural symbol of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in Piazza Castello, the palace embodies the millennia of Turin’s history, from its Roman origins to its role as a residence of the house of Savoy and the seat of the Subalpine Senate.
The work focuses on the consolidation and restoration of the façade. Through a scholarly and historical investigation in depth, richly illustrated with period images, the book explores the history of its construction and earlier restoration work in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Ample space is devoted to archival and iconographic documentation relating to the project, from eighteenth-century construction techniques to the architectural and structural features of the façade.
The restoration, conducted with an interdisciplinary approach, is documented in all its phases: from the structural analysis of the façade and the salon behind it to the consolidation techniques adopted. The work makes use of hundreds of images, three-dimensional models and virtual reconstructions, produced with the latest digital technologies.
Through a narrative entwining past and present, the volume restores the image of the restored façade as a living testimony to Turin’s history and identity.
