The Gianni Mattioli collection in Venice: a concrete example of the vitality and creative capacity of Italian 20th-century art.
[Masterpieces from the Gianni Mattioli Collection] The Guggenheim Museums are organized around certain large collections that have converged, over the years, in the Foundation; in 1997 the largest Italian private collection of the early 1900s was added, that of Gianni Mattioli, granted in safekeeping to the Venice Guggenheim. A collection developed in the intellectual and artistic circles of the avantgardes, conceived not so much for personal enjoyment as to create a means of support and diffusion of modern art, through works of exceptional quality. The history outlined in this catalogue, from Balla to Boccioni, Carrà to Depero, Modigliani to Morandi, Rosai to Russolo, Severini to Sironi and Soffici, is that of the greatest Italian artists and the Italian avantgarde movements from 1910 onward.
