An excursus through forty-odd paintings produced between 1978 and 2005. The exhibition opens with a series of portraits, anonymously commissioned, of well-known figures or people close to the artist, which represent a return to the classical tradition: a confrontation with realism and catching the sitter’s likeness. The show then continues with works depicting the various themes the artist dealt with over a 20-year period. Themes from classical texts, first and foremost the Bible, then Rabelais (The Priestess Bacbuc), Dante (The Divine Comedy) and Cervantes (Dom Quijote), as well as canvasses inspired by his own experiences. Lastly come his sculptures, gouaches and so-called Indiens (great swathes of canvas hung like tapestries) to complete the exhibition. The lavish bilingual catalogue contains essays by Robert Fleck and Hortense Lyon.
