[Francesco Borromini. Transcript of the international conference. Rome 13-15 January 2000] The volume contains the lectures, in their original languages, delivered at the international conference organized by the Biblioteca Hertziana of Rome (13-15 January 2000) for the fourth centennial of the birth of Francesco Borromini, featuring the participation of the world’s leading experts. The publication, edited by Christoph Luitpold Frommel and Elisabeth Sladek, is divided into five chapters discussing different aspects of Borromini’s work: the clients, biographical information, his relationship with antiquity, his theories.
Another chapter discusses the mentality and the scientific and religious culture of Rome, the lively setting in which Borromini lived and worked. Technical questions are approached through analysis of recent studies and restoration work of important works by the great master. Finally, the book investigates the influence of Borromini on the architects of his day, and those of the 1600s and 1700s in Italy and abroad.
