“Thought is always able to go beyond the empirical dimensions of the body: it binds us to the world. At the same time, culture is knowing how to do: in Italy there are extraordinary cases in this respect”.

One of the consequences of the pandemic was to push us to look for new solutions. And this is why today, more than ever, interdisciplinary confrontation and dialogue can help imagine and realise the future.
The Fare è Pensare (Doing is Thinking) project, which spawned this current volume, took shape in the territory where its curators grew up and worked for a long time: the Brianza area whose people and productivity, among the most dynamic and creative in the world, they frequented for decades.

This publication gathers testimonies and reflections from professionals who have, in various ways, lived and moved in the world of design, frequenting all the disciplines capable of making the “things” we see everyday impact us from other points of view. The seven interviews were the trigger for a ‘laboratory of ideas’ that continues to flourish thanks to the daily activities of each of the protagonists, in an involvement that we hope will also involve many readers. The reflections focus on understanding that industrial culture presupposes two concrete cognitive processes: interpreting the contemporary world with the aim of improving everyday existence and, immediately afterwards, trying to understand how to give substance to widespread expectations.

The voices involved are many, diverse in terms of professional background and generation, including Beatrice Basile, Sara Boarin, Mario Botta, Andrea Cancellato, Franco Caimi, Piergiorgio Monaci, Alessandro Nanni, Italo Rota and many others. The afterword is by Alessandra Smerilli, economist and lecturer at the Pontifical University.
