[Brera mai vista. Francesco Menzocchi, an ‘exceptional and versatile’ painter. The Urbino tripartite altarpiece The Deposition, 1544]. Brera mai vista presents the restoration of The Deposition by Francesco Menzocchi, one of the Romagna artist’s masterpieces, executed between 1543 and 1544. The introduction is by Maria Teresa Fiorio, while the essay by Matteo Ceriana puts into perspective the historical events and stylistic trends that influenced the painting, and gives due importance to the two double-sided sheets with preparatory drawings held by the British Museum and by the London auction house Colnaghi. The volume spans Menzocchi’s entire career, from the early stages to his highly acclaimed mature works, including major commissions from Pesaro and Venice, and the last period, which he spent entirely in Romagna. A detailed list of works, description of the restoration process and bibliography complete the book.
