The volume reflects the ambitious project devoted to contemporary art launched by the city of Naples in 2023 and continued in 2024 and 2025 at the behest of Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, and curated by Vincenzo Trione, with the aim of strengthening Naples’ contemporary potential through a series of initiatives designed specifically for public spaces and museum sites.
The projects, promoted in conjunction with institutions active in the city, such as the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli and the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella, are created by internationally renowned artists and engage with the historic identity of their locations, so furthering a process of urban redevelopment rooted in creativity.
Rampe del Salvatore, Vicolo San Pietro a Majella, Port’Alba, Piazza Municipio, Castel Nuovo, Rotonda Diaz, Piazza Mercato. Antonio Marras, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Francesco Vezzoli, Marinella Senatore, Gaetano Pesce, Mimmo Jodice, Marcello Jori and Jaume Plensa. These are the locations and protagonists of contemporary Naples, a project in progress, with its philosophy resting on certain specific aims. The goal is to reconcile a grassroots phase with a more institutional one.
The volume recalls the format of the almanac. Enriched by historical-theoretical texts, literary stories, poems and photographic reports, it aspires to be a record of a period that, in keeping with an important tradition, has made Naples a capital of contemporary art.
In its pages, it brings out the interlacing of history and contemporaneity, a classical vocabulary and an innovative alphabet, which pervades the entire project.
