Now in its third year, the Gold Medal for Italian Architecture Award is the result of collaboration between the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and PARC that constitutes an observatory for measuring the state of the art of building in Italy.

The Gold medal for Italian Architecture, a three-yearly event, has the aim of promoting and reflecting on the new and most interesting buildings constructed in Italy, and the people who have created them. Since it is impossible to erect buildings in a void, Italian architecture has acquired a particular capacity for working on the connections and the esthetics of conversions, with the awareness that, each time, it will find itself inside a complicated context within which it is expected to create new values. These are the conditions in which Italian architecture can give of its best, overcoming the restricted view of restoration as a repair or restoration in favour of a practice of reintegration. This means adding new values to existing values which are both symbolic and expressive. The creation of a new section devoted to projects associated with cultural assets and the landscape is an acknowledgement of this specific kind of architectural expertise, since it is regarded as a vital part of design in Italy, a fundamental requirement of its capacity to innovate, a shining moment in this special area of architectural talent.
