The leading exponent of the so-called "Chicago school": a fundamental figure for American architecture in the 1800s.

Born in 1856 in Boston, Sullivan was the leading exponent of the so-called “Chicago school”, the group of architects that had a decisive impact on the image of US architecture toward the end of the 1800s. Designer of the Chicago Auditorium, the first complete expression of a poetics aimed at making architectural form the result of a harmonious, organic growth of the various parts, Sullivan also designed many commercial buildings, making an original, recognizable contribution to the image of the most significant American architectural city.
This volume, the first complete monograph on the architect, retraces the genesis of his poetics, viewing it in the international cultural context, while presenting all his works with splendid illustrations: sketches, drawings, historical and present-day photographs.
