15 artists of international renown confront the symbol of the city of Bari: the Swabian Castle. The castle moat is the setting for installations which can be observed ‘from above’ in a reference to the past and the present, through a comparison between architecture of the past and examples of contemporary art. The artists participating are Vito Acconci (U.S.A.), Maria Theresa Alves (Brazil), Jimmie Durham (U.S.A.), Marco Bagnoli (Italy), Subodh Gupta (India), Maurizio Mochetti (Italy), Lara Favaretto (Italy), Jenny Holzer (U.S.A.), Allan Kaprow (U.S.A.), Luca Maria Patella (Italy), Maurizio Nannucci (Italy), Alfredo Pirri (Italy), Francesco Schiavulli (Italy), Kazuo Shiraga (Japan) and Ben Vautier (France). The catalogue to the exhibition contains an extraordinary set of illustrations, photographs specially taken at the opening ceremony to document the surprise performance of Lara Favaretto and the installations by Francesco Schiavulli and Allan Kaprow, which invite spectators to interact directly with their artworks.
