Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza – wife of the baron and great collector Hans Heinrich – is one of them, as she enriched the famous family collections with a new grouping focused on the period of the 1800s and 1900s. This book has been published for the exhibition in Rome presenting seventy works, before their permanent installation in the new wing of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. The catalogue offers a selection of paintings that illustrate the genesis of modern taste: the first naturalistic landscapes (Hugh Bolton Jones and the American landscape painters, Corot, Daubigny, the young Van Gogh, Jongkind), Impressionism (Boudin, Guillaumin, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir) and post-Impressionism (Gauguin, Bonnard, Denis, Singer Sargent, Toulouse-Lautrec), Catalan painting at the turn of the century (Nonell, Rusiñol), all the way to the avantgardes of the early 20th century, with masterpieces by Robert Delaunay, Derain, Kandinsky, Manguin, Matisse and Vlaminck. This “canonical” itinerary through modern art is preceded by a section on Goya and his followers (Lucas Velázquez, Zuloaga).
